The 27-year-old delivered with his first single at the end of January, hyping everyone up with Walkin, and although a couple of soundtrack singles came out last year, fans were eager to see what 2022 would provide for the industry, having waited two years since his last project titled Unlocked was released with Kenny Beats.
Walkin couldn’t have been a more perfect introduction to Denzel’s Melt My Eyez, See Your Future, rhythmic, energetic, smooth and melodious are all adjectives describing the way the track sounds.
Zatoichi featuring the talented British rapper Slowthai released a month after, and so had Troubles featuring T-Pain, for the purpose of the review I had decided not to listen to the tracks until the album came out. I was pleased sonically because both songs show a side of Denzel Curry that we know with Zatoichi- drums are heavy, gunshot adlibs and an aggressive side of himself that we are so fond of- as opposed to Troubles which is slower as T-Pain does what he does best, appropriating the excellent use of autotune as he has amazingly done his whole career.
The official track-list was released just a week before the Friday and is composed of 14 tracks in total, including the previous three singles plus features from Rico Nasty, JID, 6lack amongst many others and include production credit from Thundercat, JPEG Mafia, Kenny Beats and more. It’s worth noting that over 20 different beat makers helped compose the project.
Melt Session #1 is the opening track of the project and is beautifully constructed, it is an addictive song to listen to, as are many songs on Melt My Eyez, See Your Future. X-Wing, Walkin, Melt Session #1 are just a few that come to mind as the album unravels itself. “I keep walkin’, I keep walkin’, I keep walkin” says Denzel Curry as we see the transition to Walkin.
These two joints are definitely my two favourite opening songs of any album that came out this year. I would even argue for the best opening three songs, on Worst Come to Worst, Denzel is unapologetic, provides an uplifting vision of life and executes it extraordinarily.
The album contains many elements, having being produced by so many people, it’s only right that we see many sides of Denzel Curry and his guests that are unfamiliar to many, which is what makes for a splendid result in the end.
John Wayne, Mental and Angelz are three tracks that can be compared to each other, we are lyrically aware of what the rapper native to Florida can do, but to hear different sounds as his music career develops is truly remarkable. On Angelz, he opens up on having trust issues, translating his many experiences into life lessons as Karriem Riggins sings into the abyss.
Mental is also using the same tempo but with different background vocals.
Listening to the project from A until Z has been an absolute delight, there is diversity on each track and this will rank highly on his discography in my eyes. I look forward to listening to it again and having on constant rotation, hoping to pick up new sounds and new bars, as fans continue finding out over the years.
Melt My Eyez, See Your Future is a solid album, a lot of work has been put into the project, from outstanding production to conscious rapping, it’s such a pleasure to hear Denzel Curry again, after being half-absent last year in the industry scene.
